Do we like Uncle Tobys?
Australian breakfast brand making oats, muesli bars and snacks, with its main factory at Wahgunyah, Victoria.
Our score: 6 out of 10. A familiar, long-running food brand with local jobs, but we found little on its conduct. It sits inside Nestlé, which comes with baggage.
Uncle Tobys started out as Parsons Bros, set up in Melbourne in 1861. The Shepparton News says oats were first sold under the Uncle Tobys name in 1893. It's one of Australia's best-known breakfast brands.
Sources describe it today as a wholly owned Nestlé subsidiary, bought in 2006. Its main factory is at Wahgunyah in Victoria. One regional report said the plant helps make 26,000 tonnes of oats a year.
It hasn't all been smooth. The Border Mail reported that Nestlé pulled the plug on Vita Brits cereal after 31 years, and that jobs were set to be cut at the site. The company said Vita Brits was unprofitable. Those stories look older, and we couldn't confirm their dates.
