Do we like Twitch?

Live-streaming platform, mostly for gaming, run from the US and owned by Amazon.

Our score: 4 out of 10. Mixed, leaning cautious. Child-safety failures and a past leak weigh on the score, and some real safety and charity work doesn't fully offset them. We'd hold off.

Twitch grew out of the streaming service Justin.tv. Co-founder Emmett Shear ran it for more than a decade, then stepped back in March 2023. Dan Clancy, a former Google executive who had been its president since 2019, took over as CEO. Amazon owns it. Clancy says it wouldn't have grown so big without Amazon's 2014 purchase.

The big stain is child safety. In 2022 Bloomberg reported that 1,976 accounts showed unusual patterns of following child streamers, and Twitch called the numbers deeply upsetting. In 2024 Bloomberg and the Canadian Centre for Child Protection reported sexualised content involving children in Twitch Clips. Twitch said it was building new detection tools.

In October 2021 Twitch confirmed a breach. It blamed a server configuration error. Source code and creator payout figures were published online. Twitch said it had no evidence that passwords were disclosed. A September 2026 claim of 40,000 streamers' data for sale looks, according to Cybernews researchers, like scraping rather than a Twitch breach.

There are good bits too. Twitch rolled out phone-verified chat after scrutiny of hate raids, and says it has doubled its safety team. Its Streamer Bowl is run with the NFL Players Association and has a charity prize pool. Overall we see a mixed record, so a middling-to-low score.
