Do we like Tsingtao?
Brews Tsingtao beer, one of China's biggest brewers; based in Qingdao, China.
Our score: 5 out of 10. A big, long-established brewer. We found no fines or serious wrongdoing by the company, but the 2023 vat video hurt trust. We'd hold back and stay neutral.
Tsingtao is one of China's best-known beer brands. It's listed in Shanghai and Hong Kong. Its controlling shareholder has been buying more shares in a plan running through 2026, and the company says control isn't changing.
The big drama came in October 2023. A video on Weibo appeared to show a man urinating into a malt container at a Tsingtao plant in Pingdu. Tsingtao said it sealed the affected batch and told police.
National Business Daily said police detained both the man in the video and the person who filmed it. Reports differed on whether they were direct employees. Shares fell about 6.75% and some South Korean customers binned their beer.
We found no fines or recalls in what we read, but we also found little on its environment or worker record. That leaves it in the middle at 5.
