Do we like Tripadvisor?

Travel review and booking platform (hotels, restaurants, experiences) based in Needham, Massachusetts, USA.

Our score: 5 out of 10. Mixed. Useful, widely used reviews, but fake-review problems have drawn regulators' attention and the CEO and CFO are both leaving. We'd hold off until the new leadership is clear.

Tripadvisor is the travel review giant run out of Massachusetts. Co-founder Steve Kaufer handed the CEO job to Matt Goldberg, who started on 1 July 2022.

Its big reputation problem is fake reviews. In 2014 Italy's competition authority fined it about €500,000 for not controlling false reviews while calling its content authentic. An Italian court later overturned that fine.

Back in 2012 the UK's Advertising Standards Authority banned it from claiming or implying that all its reviews were from real travellers.

Right now it's in transition. On 5 November 2026 it announced Goldberg will step down as CEO, staying until 16 February 2027. The CFO is also leaving. A filing says this isn't due to any disagreement over operations or policies.
