Do we like Trello?
Kanban-style project and task management app, owned by Atlassian (HQ Sydney, Australia; Trello team in New York).
Our score: 6 out of 10. A useful, widely used product with a free tier. A 2024 data scrape and Atlassian's layoff controversy keep us from a clear yes.
Trello is the card-and-board to-do app. Atlassian bought it in 2017 for about $425 million, roughly $360 million of it in cash. Atlassian promised to keep it running as a standalone product, and it has been.
The big blot is the 2024 breach. A hacker called 'emo' used an unauthenticated Trello API to match 500 million email addresses to accounts, and compiled profiles for over 15 million users. Atlassian said no internal systems were accessed and changed the API afterwards.
Some security experts, including Traceable AI's Richard Bird, said Atlassian was downplaying its own role in the leak.
On the parent's record, Atlassian's layoffs of about 10% of staff led to an NLRB complaint over an alleged illegal firing. A 2023 shareholder suit also accused its board and executives of misleading investors. We couldn't confirm either one touched Trello staff.
Trello is still adding features. In July 2026 it launched AI tools for paid plans. Our score is a middling 6: a decent product, but a mixed record on security and the parent's staffing.
