Do we like TotalEnergies?

Oil, gas, LNG and power company with a growing renewables arm, based in Courbevoie (Paris), France.

Our score: 3 out of 10. Not for us: it's still mainly an oil and gas business. A French court found its climate ads misleading, and its renewables push is real but selective.

TotalEnergies is the French oil major that renamed itself from Total to stress its clean energy investments. Patrick Pouyanné is the boss, and the company is still mostly about oil and gas.

In October 2025 a Paris civil court ruled it misled consumers with its climate advertising. Greenpeace France, Friends of the Earth France and Notre Affaire à Tous brought the case. Reports call it the first such conviction of a major oil and gas company.

The court ordered it to remove its carbon-neutrality claims and pay the groups' costs. It said it wouldn't appeal. The court threw out other claims, such as those on gas and biofuels. TotalEnergies also sued Greenpeace France over a report on its emissions.

On the plus side, TaiyangNews reports a renewables and power push, with a 100 GW target by 2030. It is also recycling capital by selling half-stakes in solar and wind portfolios. That's a real business shift, but fossil fuels still dominate, so the score is low.
