Do we like The Good Guys?
Appliance and electronics retail chain with warehouse-style stores across Australia, based in Melbourne. Part of JB Hi-Fi.
Our score: 5 out of 10. Mixed. It's a big, popular retailer with some recycling and giving programs. But it was fined A$13.5m in 2025 for misleading store-credit promotions, so we'd hold off.
The Good Guys started as a single suburban Melbourne store in 1952. It grew into a big appliance chain under the Muir family. In 2016 JB Hi-Fi bought 100% of it for A$870 million in cash.
It's now one of three JB Hi-Fi Group brands, alongside JB Hi-Fi and e&s. It sells appliances and electronics through stores and online. Sales for the latest full year were A$2.94 billion, though recent sales updates show comparable sales dipping slightly.
The big blot is the store-credit case. The ACCC took it to court over 116 promotions run between 2019 and 2023. The Federal Court ordered A$13.5m in penalties. The Good Guys admitted it hadn't properly disclosed key conditions like expiry dates. It also admitted paying about 21,500 customers late.
In its favour, it cooperated, admitted liability and had already repaid some customers. The judge said there was no evidence it meant to break the law, and that some breaches were self-reported. That's better than fighting it, but it was still a lot of customers caught out.
There's also the extended-warranty question. A Choice mystery shop of Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi and Good Guys stores raised concerns about how warranties were sold. A class action against JB Hi-Fi itself, not The Good Guys, is heading to trial. All told, that makes it a middling five.
