Do we like Tesco?
UK's biggest supermarket chain: groceries, Clubcard loyalty scheme, Tesco Bank (sold) and Booker wholesale. Based in Welwyn Garden City, UK.
Our score: 5 out of 10. Mixed: a huge, well-run grocer with a record of fines and breaches in the past. The search results gave us little on recent conduct, so we hold back from a high score.
Tesco is the UK's biggest supermarket. Its chief executive is Ken Murphy. Gerry Murphy became chair in September 2023, taking over from John Allan after eight years in the job.
The big black mark is the 2014 accounting scandal. Tesco agreed to pay £129m to settle a Serious Fraud Office probe into overstated profits, and the High Court approved the deal in 2017.
There were also food safety and supplier problems. A court fined Tesco £7.56m for selling out-of-date food at three stores. The Groceries Code Adjudicator found Tesco broke the code on paying suppliers.
On Clubcard pricing, Which? reported Tesco to the CMA over unclear unit pricing. Tesco said Trading Standards had backed its approach. It's a mixed record, so we give it a middling score.
