Do we like Tencent Games?
Video game publisher and developer (Honor of Kings, PUBG Mobile, Riot Games), part of Tencent, based in Shenzhen, China
Our score: 4 out of 10. A giant of the games world with real youth-protection rules forced on it, plus a US military-links listing and child-addiction suits. We'd be wary about backing them.
Tencent Games is the gaming arm of Chinese tech giant Tencent. It runs huge titles like Honor of Kings. It's one of the biggest players in games worldwide, but our searches turned up little on how it started or who runs it.
In 2021 a Beijing children's rights group sued Tencent over Honor of Kings content and the game's lowered minimum age. Reports say the age went from 18 in 2017 to 12 in 2021. Separately, the regulator limited minors to games from 8 to 9pm on Fridays, weekends and holidays.
Tencent Games also said it had sued more than 20 platforms that trade game accounts, pointing to weak oversight of stores that rent and sell accounts to minors.
In January 2025 the Pentagon added Tencent to its list of Chinese military companies. Tencent called it clearly a mistake and said it would pursue legal action if necessary. The listing doesn't directly bring sanctions, but it can hurt a company's reputation. Mixed record, so a middling-low score.
