Do we like T-Mobile?
US wireless carrier (mobile, 5G and home internet), based in Bellevue, Washington; majority-owned by Deutsche Telekom.
Our score: 3 out of 10. Big and popular, but repeated data breaches and regulator fines on security and location data mean we wouldn't back them with enthusiasm.
T-Mobile is the US carrier that grew into a giant, and Deutsche Telekom still controls it. Srini Gopalan took over as CEO on 1 November 2025, and Mike Sievert became vice chairman. Gopalan joined Deutsche Telekom in 2016.
The big stain is data security. In September 2024 T-Mobile settled with the FCC for $31.5 million over several breaches between 2021 and 2023. Half was a civil penalty and half was spending on better security. The company didn't agree with the FCC's accusations.
One breach exposed names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and driver's licence numbers for 7.8 million current customers and about 40 million former and prospective ones. A separate $350 million class-action settlement covered the 2021 breach.
That came on top of an April 2024 FCC location-data penalty of $80 million. Reports say Deutsche Telekom has weighed a merger with T-Mobile, which Elliott opposes. Given the repeated privacy failings, we land low.
