Do we like Syngenta?
Agrochemical and seeds giant (pesticides, crop protection, seeds), headquartered in Basel, Switzerland.
Our score: 3 out of 10. Big sustainability talk, but the paraquat Parkinson's litigation and a history of pesticide fines mean we wouldn't rush to back them.
Syngenta is one of the world's biggest pesticide and seed makers, based in Basel. ChemChina bought it in 2017 for US$43 billion, China's largest foreign takeover, and ChemChina was later merged into Sinochem in 2021.
The big drama is paraquat. In April 2025 Syngenta signed a letter agreement with lead plaintiffs' lawyers to settle most of the 5,800+ US cases claiming the weedkiller causes Parkinson's. A master settlement followed in August. Syngenta says the claims have no merit.
It has also settled individual cases right before trial, including a farmer with Parkinson's in Philadelphia. Some plaintiffs' lawyers said they were shut out of the talks.
On the green side, Syngenta pushes regenerative farming, with a goal of 50 million hectares by 2030, and a PepsiCo deal that rewards farmers for such practices. Reporters note that the company sponsored the industry pavilion at COP29, which drew criticism.
