Do we like Swiggy?
Food and grocery delivery app (Instamart, Dineout) based in Bengaluru, India.
Our score: 4 out of 10. Useful, widely used service, but gig-worker treatment and repeated consumer fines make us hesitant. We'd hold off backing them with our money.
Swiggy is one of India's big delivery apps, based in Bengaluru and run by co-founder Sriharsha Majety. It listed on the stock market in November 2024. Prosus, the Naspers-linked investor, is its biggest shareholder, with roughly a quarter of the company.
On customers, consumer courts have ordered it to pay up. One fined it ₹1,000 over a ₹104 refund that wasn't paid. A Telangana court reportedly fined it ₹35,000 for inflating delivery distance to overcharge a customer.
On workers, Swiggy and Zomato said Delhi riders were wrongly issued challans under a bike-taxi ban. Swiggy, Zepto and others have also asked the Karnataka High Court to strike down or suspend the state's gig-worker welfare law.
