Do we like Suzuki?
Japanese maker of small cars, motorcycles and outboard motors, based in Hamamatsu; big in India through Maruti Suzuki.
Our score: 6 out of 10. A solid, practical carmaker with a big India business, but it has a record of faked inspection and emissions data. We'd back it with some caution.
Suzuki is a Japanese maker of small cars, bikes and outboard motors. Its president is Toshihiro Suzuki. He says India is its most critical market and its biggest export base.
The big drama came in 2018. Suzuki, Mazda and Yamaha admitted using fake emissions data for pre-shipment checks. Suzuki said nearly half of its 12,819 new-car inspections were improper.
There was also an earlier inspection scandal. Japan's transport ministry sought a fine from a court over irregularities at three Shizuoka plants, where some inspection check sheets were falsified.
Looking ahead, Suzuki plans to invest Rs 70,000 crore in India by 2031. Maruti Suzuki has started building its first global battery EV, the eVitara. Our score is a middling-good 6, held back by the cheating history.
