Do we like Subaru?

Japanese carmaker known for all-wheel-drive cars, Outbacks and Foresters, and boxer engines; based in Tokyo.

Our score: 6 out of 10. A decent, well-regarded carmaker with a few past compliance blemishes and slow EV progress. We'd back them cautiously, with no major red flags in what we found.

Subaru is the Tokyo-based carmaker behind the Outback, Forester and Impreza. Toyota is its biggest shareholder at about 20%, up from 17% in 2019, and the two have built cars together, including the bZ4X and Solterra electric crossover.

Atsushi Osaki took over as CEO in June 2023, replacing Tomomi Nakamura. The change was widely reported as part of Subaru's push to catch up on EVs.

The big blot is the 2017 inspection scandal. Subaru admitted that uncertified staff had done final checks on cars for the Japanese market. The recall grew to about 530,000 vehicles, and the CEO and other executives handed back part of their pay.

There have been smaller US matters too. Subaru of America agreed to pay over $6 million to settle a class action over faulty infotainment systems, and California regulators penalised it over non-certified Foresters years ago. Our searches turned up nothing newer than that, so the score is middling-to-good.
