Do we like Stack Overflow?

Q&A website and enterprise tools for programmers, run by Stack Exchange Inc. Based in New York, with remote staff.

Our score: 5 out of 10. Mixed. We like the free knowledge it built, but the OpenAI deal and the bans on protesting users hurt trust, and we'd hold off backing it.

Stack Overflow is the go-to question site for programmers. Joel Spolsky co-founded it, and Prashanth Chandrasekar, who came from Rackspace, became CEO in September 2019. Spolsky stayed on as chairman.

In 2021 Prosus bought it for $1.8 billion, according to SiliconANGLE. In October 2023 it cut 28% of its staff, and Chandrasekar said the focus was on profitability.

In 2024 it struck a deal giving OpenAI access to its API. TechRadar reported that users who edited or deleted their answers in protest were suspended. Protesters pointed to the GDPR right to be forgotten, but the site's terms say Stack Overflow owns the content.
