Do we like Squarespace?
Website builder, domains and online store software, based in New York City.
Our score: 5 out of 10. A popular, mostly harmless product. Our searches found no big scandals, but little on how it treats workers or the environment, and private equity owns it now. Middling.
Squarespace is the New York website builder founded by Anthony Casalena. It sells templates, domains and online store tools, mostly to small businesses and creators.
In May 2024 private equity firm Permira agreed to take it private for about $6.9bn in cash. In September it raised the offer to $46.50 a share, valuing the deal at $7.2bn. The deal closed in October 2024.
The buyout was financed partly with private credit. Coverage mentions a $2.65bn loan led by funds including Blackstone, Blue Owl and Ares. Heavy debt and private equity ownership can mean pressure on prices and costs.
On the legal side we found little. A patent suit from Express Mobile was partly tossed out by a judge, and we found no FTC action against Squarespace. We found no major regulatory trouble, so we land in the middle.
