Do we like Sonic Drive-In?
Drive-in fast-food chain (burgers, shakes, slushes) with carhop service, based in Oklahoma City, USA
Our score: 5 out of 10. A well-liked, ordinary fast-food chain. Its main black mark is a 2017 card-data breach, and we found nothing recent that stands out either way. We'd be lukewarm backers.
Sonic is the carhop drive-in chain from Oklahoma City. For years it was a listed company run by longtime CEO Cliff Hudson. In 2018 Inspire Brands, the owner of Arby's and Buffalo Wild Wings, bought it for about $2.3 billion.
After the sale, Inspire said Sonic would run as a separate business unit based in Oklahoma City. Claudia San Pedro led it and reported to Inspire CEO Paul Brown. One later report says she stepped down for family medical reasons.
The big drama was a 2017 data breach. Malware hit payment systems at 325 Sonic locations. Sonic agreed to a $4.3 million consumer settlement, which a federal court approved in 2019. A separate $5.7 million settlement with banks followed.
A shareholder also sued in 2018 to try to block the sale. The suit alleged the board had withheld key financial data. We found nothing more recent, so we land in the middle.
