Do we like SM Supermalls?
Shopping mall chain in the Philippines, run by SM Prime Holdings, part of the SM group.
Our score: 5 out of 10. Mixed. It's a huge mall operator with active clean-up and waste programmes, but the labour ("endo") accusations and the Baguio tree row stay unresolved in what we found.
SM Supermalls is the mall arm of SM Prime Holdings, one of the biggest mall operators in the Philippines. It sits inside the wider SM group, and Hans Sy appears in recent coverage talking up the company's values and sustainability.
On the labour side, SunStar reported that lawmakers sought a probe into SM's "endo" (short-term contract) practices. SM's reply, as reported, was that it does not do contractualization. We found no outcome, so we treat this as an accusation only.
On the environment, SM Prime says it has teamed up with the DENR on coastal clean-ups. Manila Bulletin also covered its waste-free push. Both are company-friendly sources, so they show intent more than independently checked results.
We'd put it at a middle score. There are real programmes and a big presence, but we couldn't verify tax, privacy or worker conditions, and the labour questions are still open.
