Do we like Skoda?
Czech carmaker (Škoda Auto) making petrol, hybrid and electric cars, based in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic.
Our score: 6 out of 10. A well-run, popular value brand, but tied to the VW diesel scandal and now between bosses. We'd back it, with some caution.
Skoda is the Czech arm of Volkswagen Group. Its boss since 2022, Klaus Zellmer, took it from tenth in European registrations in 2022 to second in the first half of 2026, according to Volkswagen. It's also the most profitable brand in the group.
The latest drama is at the top. Škoda confirmed on 21 September 2026 that Zellmer is leaving, and Volvo Cars named him its new CEO. Holger Peters is interim head. Börsen-Zeitung says Thomas Schäfer is seen as the main candidate to take over permanently.
Then there's dieselgate. A Prague court ruled that Czech owners of Skoda and VW cars qualify for compensation of about 533 million crowns. Skoda Auto said the judgment doesn't apply to claims against it, and it doesn't recognise those claims. It says technical fixes were made for all affected cars.
Our verdict is a middling-to-good 6. The business is strong and the cars sell well, but the emissions scandal left a mark and our searches turned up little on its environment or worker record. The leadership change adds some uncertainty.
