Do we like Singapore Airlines?
Full-service airline flying worldwide from Changi Airport, Singapore. Also owns Scoot and Singapore Airlines Cargo.
Our score: 7 out of 10. We'd lean towards backing them. They pay out quickly after accidents and are spending on cleaner fuel. Against that, there was a cartel penalty and the SQ321 lawsuits are still going.
Singapore Airlines flies out of Changi and is the Singapore flag carrier. Temasek, the Singapore state investment company, is the controlling shareholder. The CEO is Goh Choon Phong, who joined in 1990 and took the top job on 1 January 2011. Peter Seah chairs the board.
The big drama was flight SQ321 in May 2024. Severe turbulence killed a 73-year-old British passenger and injured scores of others. The airline apologised and offered US$10,000 to those with minor injuries, advance payments of US$25,000 for serious cases, and full fare refunds.
Two years on, the lawsuits keep coming. Singapore's Transport Safety Investigation Bureau published its final report in May 2026, and CNA reported it found the aircraft's weather radar likely didn't pick up the storm. Several passengers have since taken legal action in the UK High Court.
There's older baggage too. Singapore Airlines Cargo was penalised in Australia over cartel conduct on cargo pricing. On the greener side, this month they signed to buy up to 4,800 tonnes of fuel made from waste gases, with deliveries from 2028. They aim for sustainable fuel to make up 5% of their total fuel by 2030. We give them a solid 7.
