Do we like Shopee?
Online marketplace in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, run by Sea Limited, based in Singapore
Our score: 5 out of 10. Mixed. It's huge and growing, but regulators in Indonesia and Thailand have found competition problems and there are labour accusations. We'd hold off.
Shopee is the e-commerce arm of Singapore-based Sea Limited. Forrest Li is chairman and CEO. In 2026 Shopee made up about 72% of Sea's revenue, and Q2 revenue was $5.6 billion, up 48% on the year.
Li reportedly held 59.1% of the voting power as of March 2025, so he has a lot of control. The company is guiding for about 25% Shopee GMV growth in 2026.
Regulators have noticed. Indonesia's antitrust agency accused Shopee of favouring its own delivery arm, and Shopee admitted breaches and agreed to change its practices. MLex reported in September 2026 that Thailand's competition regulator fined the Thai unit.
On the people side, The Star reported Shopee rescinded job offers in 2022. In the Philippines, Malaya reported accusations of union-busting against SPX and Shopee Philippines. We found no outcome. That's why we land in the middle.
