Do we like Shake Shack?
Fast-casual burger chain with company-run and licensed restaurants, based in New York City, USA.
Our score: 6 out of 10. A decent, well-run burger chain. It has paid several workplace settlements, but none were huge scandals. We'd back it with some caution.
Shake Shack is the New York burger chain that grew into a national, publicly listed business. Rob Lynch, formerly of Papa Johns, has been CEO since 2024. He plans to grow to about 1,500 company-owned US restaurants.
The company's latest shareholder letter reports five straight quarters of positive traffic. Those are business results, not good deeds, so they don't move our score much.
The worker record is mixed. In 2022 it agreed to pay $6 million over New York scheduling claims without admitting wrongdoing. In 2024 it agreed to pay $244,500 over Massachusetts child labor allegations, according to Law360.
California's Civil Rights Department announced a $20,000 settlement with a former employee who said he was misgendered at work. Shake Shack also agreed to update its anti-harassment policies. We score it a middling 6.
