Do we like SEEK?
Online jobs marketplace and employment services, listed on the ASX, based in Melbourne, Australia
Our score: 6 out of 10. A dominant jobs platform with no major recent fines in what we found. Open questions on AI data use and a court fight with a rival keep us at a cautious maybe.
SEEK is the big Australian jobs site, listed on the ASX. Co-founder Andrew Bassat stepped down as CEO in 2021 and Ian Narev took over. Narev is the former Commonwealth Bank boss, hired into SEEK in 2019.
Narev's hiring drew some comment, because coverage at the time noted he was CBA's CEO when the bank was accused of breaching laws on more than 53,000 occasions through its cash deposit machines.
SEEK got into a legal fight with Employment Hero over access to its job-posting API. The Federal Court ordered SEEK to keep that access going while the case ran. The case was later discontinued after the two sides agreed to resolve it.
On privacy, one report said SEEK let users know it is training AI on their data through a little-noticed privacy policy update. In Hong Kong, the privacy regulator found that eight advertisers' blind ads on SEEK's JobsDB site involved unfair collection of job seekers' data. JobsDB paused those ads in November 2024. Our search didn't confirm JobsDB is part of SEEK.
It's a useful service with real market power, and we found no big fines. The AI data use and the court fight with a rival hold the score at a middling 6.
