Do we like Sanitarium?
Makes Weet-Bix, Up&Go and plant-based foods; Australian and NZ business based in Australia, run by the Adventist Church.
Our score: 6 out of 10. Church-owned, much-loved food maker with a decent record. It has had a misleading-claims case and a bullying row in NZ, so we'd back it with some caution.
Sanitarium is the company behind Weet-Bix. The Adventist Church owns both the Australian and New Zealand arms. There are no outside shareholders, which is unusual for a big food brand.
In 2010 the ACCC said Sanitarium's packs of several fruit cereals showed more fruit than they contained. Sanitarium cooperated and offered a court-enforceable undertaking. Our search didn't turn up a fine.
In 2023 Sanitarium stopped supplying Weet-Bix to The Warehouse in NZ, citing supply constraints. The Commerce Commission looked into a complaint from The Warehouse. Sanitarium backed down and kept supplying, and says it did not breach the Commerce Act.
It's a mostly clean, trusted brand with a few blemishes. We couldn't find recent news on its workers or environment, so we've kept the score middling-good.
