Do we like Ryanair?
Europe's biggest low-cost airline, flying short-haul routes across Europe; based in Dublin, Ireland.
Our score: 4 out of 10. Cheap fares and huge reach, but a pile of regulatory fines, fights with customers' booking sites and fast-rising emissions. We'd hold off backing them.
Ryanair is the Dublin-based budget airline run by Michael O'Leary. Fans like the cheap fares. Critics say it plays rough with regulators, rivals and the climate. Our searches turned up little 2026 coverage of how it treats its staff.
The biggest drama is in Italy. The competition regulator AGCM fined Ryanair about €255.8m in December 2025. It said Ryanair ran an elaborate strategy that hurt travel agencies' ability to buy its flights. Ryanair called the ruling legally flawed and said it would appeal.
It doesn't lose every fight. In May 2026 an Italian court overturned a separate fine of about €4.2m over Covid-era flights. Ryanair said the regulator had discriminated against it.
On the climate, the Irish Times reported in May 2026 that Ryanair's emissions rose again in 2025 to 12.3m tonnes, up 2% on 2024. That is two-thirds more than ten years ago. Combined with the fines, that's why we land below the middle.
