Do we like Red Rooster?
Australian roast and fried chicken fast-food chain, mostly franchised, run by Craveable Brands in Australia.
Our score: 4 out of 10. Not a clear no, but we wouldn't back them. A private-equity-owned fast-food franchise with a past wage-underpayment problem, and we found little to offset it.
Red Rooster is an Australian chicken chain, and most of its stores are franchised. It was bought in 2002 by Australian Fast Foods, which owned Chicken Treat. Today it sits inside Craveable Brands, alongside Oporto, Chicken Treat and Chargrill Charlie's.
Craveable has been owned by Hong Kong private equity firm PAG Asia Capital since 2019. Archer Capital sold it to PAG that year. So the money goes to a private equity investor, not to a founder or the public.
The big drama was wages. In 2014 a self-audit under a Fair Work Ombudsman compliance deed found about $645,000 owed to roughly 3,140 staff in 106 franchise stores. The Ombudsman chose not to prosecute and praised the cooperation.
The score is middling. Owning up and repaying staff counts for something, but underpayment across so many stores is a bad sign for a franchise model. We found little good to weigh against it.
