Do we like Rebel Sport?
Australian sporting goods retailer with stores across Australia and New Zealand, part of Super Retail Group.
Our score: 4 out of 10. A big, familiar sports shop, but repeated staff underpayment problems under its parent group make us hesitant to back it.
Rebel is Australia's big sports chain. Super Retail Group, which also owns BCF, bought it from Archer Capital in 2011 for $610 million. It then folded the Amart Sports stores into the Rebel brand.
The pay history is the sore spot. In 2019 the group apologised after an audit found it owed about $32 million in overtime to roughly 10% of its workforce. It repaid staff, which counts for something.
In January 2023 the Fair Work Ombudsman took the group and four subsidiaries, Rebel Sport among them, to court. It alleged about $1.14 million in underpayments for a sample of 146 staff between 2017 and 2019. We didn't find the outcome.
More trouble in 2026. Adero Law is reported to be preparing a class action for Rebel salaried managers, alleging unpaid work during breaks and before and after shifts. Super Retail said it hadn't been served with the claim. These are allegations only.
Overall it's a mixed picture, and we lean cautious. Repeated pay problems weigh heavily, and we found little good to set against them.
