Do we like REA Group?

Runs realestate.com.au, Australia's biggest property listings site, plus mortgage and India/Asia property businesses; based in Melbourne.

Our score: 5 out of 10. A dominant, very profitable platform. The competition regulator has probed its pricing and contracts, so we'd back it only cautiously.

REA Group runs realestate.com.au, the site most Australians use to look for a home. It's controlled by News Corp, which holds about 61%. Because of that control, it's seen as part of the Murdoch empire's stable of businesses.

Leadership changed recently. Owen Wilson, CEO for more than six years, stepped down. In August 2025 the company named Cameron McIntyre, the former head of CAR Group (carsales), as his successor. He started on 3 November 2025.

The drama is about market power. In 2025 REA disclosed that the ACCC had sent it a compulsory notice as part of a pricing investigation. Agents complained that listing costs had shot up. REA said it was cooperating fully.

The ACCC also looked at REA's contracts with agencies, including clauses requiring all of an agency's properties to be listed on realestate.com.au. REA agreed to drop these restrictions. We found no fine and no finding of wrongdoing, so we land in the middle.
