Do we like Ram Trucks?
Pickup trucks and commercial vans (Ram 1500, HD, ProMaster), a Stellantis brand based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, US
Our score: 4 out of 10. Popular, capable trucks, but a diesel-emissions guilty plea, large recalls and heavy fuel use leave us lukewarm. We wouldn't rush to back them.
Ram is the pickup and van brand inside Stellantis, the carmaker formed from the merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA. It's a big name in American trucks. Stellantis named Matt VanDyke as Ram CEO in July 2026. He reports to Tim Kuniskis.
The big drama is diesel. FCA US, the predecessor company, pleaded guilty in 2022 to criminal conspiracy and agreed to about $300 million in penalties over EcoDiesel 2014-2016 Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee emissions. Owners got a software fix, an extended warranty and cash payments.
In December 2024, California's air regulator CARB announced a roughly $4.2 million settlement with Stellantis over 2014-2016 Ram ProMaster diesel vans. That's a second emissions case, though a much smaller one.
Safety is the other worry. In July 2025 the US safety regulator NHTSA opened a recall query into about 1.2 million 2013-2018 Ram trucks over brake transmission shift interlock problems that may let them roll away. A query is an investigation, not a penalty. We found no fine tied to it.
So we give it a 4. The trucks sell well, but the emissions record and recall history stop us from backing it with our money.
