Do we like Powerade?
Sports drink brand made by The Coca-Cola Company, which is based in Atlanta, US. It competes with Gatorade and BodyArmor.
Our score: 4 out of 10. A sugary sports drink from a giant company. We found nothing scandalous about the brand, but the parent's plastic record and Powerade's own ad ruling hold it back.
Powerade is Coca-Cola's answer to Gatorade. In 2023 Coke moved it under its BodyArmor unit, which it bought in 2021. At that point it held about 14% of the US market, against Gatorade's 63%, and Coke said it wanted to be number one within five years.
In 2020 it added zero-sugar lines, Powerade Ultra and Power Water. CNBC reported it as the first new Powerade line since Powerade Zero in 2007.
It has had an ad dispute. The BBB's National Advertising Review Board affirmed a recommendation that Coca-Cola change Powerade's "50% more electrolytes" marketing, after PepsiCo complained on behalf of Gatorade.
The parent company has plastic troubles. LA County sued Coca-Cola and PepsiCo in 2024, accusing them of misleading people about recyclable bottles. The American Beverage Association denied the accusations. Earth Island Institute also sued Coke over its sustainability claims.
