Do we like Popeyes?
Fried chicken fast-food chain, founded in New Orleans; run from Miami, Florida, mostly through franchisees.
Our score: 4 out of 10. Popular chicken, but a string of labour-law cases at franchisees and no clear sign the parent does much good beyond jobs. We'd hold back.
The franchise model has been a problem. In Massachusetts, the attorney general cited and settled with Popeyes operators over labour-law charges. A Michigan franchise was cited over child labour. In Oakland, an operator agreed to pay $200K after allegedly hiring workers as young as 13.
More recently, a Toronto franchisee with 13 restaurants lost its agreements after staff complained of unpaid wages. In Texas, two customers sued over an object they said they found in their chicken. The company disputes it. Neither claim has been proven.
Business-wise it's still expanding in Ireland, Poland and El Salvador, though a big franchisee's bankruptcy closed about 20 restaurants. We like the chicken more than the track record, so the score is below the middle.
