Do we like Peters Ice Cream?
Australian ice cream brand (Drumstick, Killer Python, Golden Gaytime rival lines), founded 1907; part of Froneri.
Our score: 5 out of 10. A well-known, long-running brand with no big scandals, but a $12m penalty for breaking competition law holds it at middling. We'd hold off for now.
The brand changed hands a few times. Nestlé ended up with it nationwide by 2009, then R&R Ice Cream bought it in 2014. In 2018 R&R merged with Nestlé's ice cream arm to form Froneri, which now owns Peters and, since 2019, Tip Top.
The big drama was with the competition watchdog. The ACCC said Peters stopped distributor PFD from handling rival single-serve ice creams for petrol and convenience stores, from about 2014 to 2019.
Peters admitted exclusive dealing. In March 2022 the Federal Court ordered a $12m penalty and a compliance program, according to a case database. On the plus side, Froneri has promoted a food-waste project with imperfect plums. Overall we land at a middling score.
