Do we like Paramount?
Hollywood studio and media group (Paramount Pictures, CBS, Paramount+, MTV), merged with Skydance; based in Los Angeles/New York.
Our score: 4 out of 10. Big names and real output, but the Trump settlement, layoffs and news-independence worries mean we'd hold off for now.
Paramount is one of Hollywood's oldest studios. In 2025 it merged with Skydance Media in a deal worth about $8 billion. David Ellison, Skydance's boss, now runs the combined company. He says he wants it to be tech-forward.
The big drama was the Trump lawsuit over a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris. NPR reported that Paramount agreed to pay $16 million, with no apology. The FCC was reviewing the Skydance deal at the time. CBS News staff were angry, and NPR said CBS News's then-chief executive Wendy McMahon had opposed settling.
After the merger, Paramount was reported to be cutting at least 1,000 jobs. It has also made other layoffs, including several hundred roles, about 3.5% of its US workforce, according to a Variety-linked headline. We couldn't confirm the dates.
Ellison has kept making moves. He bought The Free Press for $150 million and made its founder, Bari Weiss, editor-in-chief of CBS News, which sparked debate. Reports also say Paramount has exclusive US UFC rights from 2026. Our score is middling because of the news-independence worries and job cuts.
