Do we like Oracle?
Database, cloud infrastructure and business software maker, based in Austin, Texas.
Our score: 4 out of 10. Not one we'd back with our money on ethics: a record of settlements, heavy AI-driven debt, and big layoffs. Strong business, but a mixed conscience.
Oracle is one of the oldest names in business software, known for databases and now a big cloud and AI-infrastructure push. Larry Ellison co-founded it and is still executive chairman and CTO.
In September 2025 Safra Catz stepped back to executive vice chair, and Clay Magouyrk and Mike Sicilia became co-CEOs. Reporting says Ellison has been less visible at events.
The legal history is long. Oracle paid about $200M in 2011 to settle claims it overcharged the US government. The SEC also fined it $2M over off-book funds at its India unit, which Oracle neither admitted nor denied.
More recently it agreed to pay $115M to settle a privacy class action over collecting data on people without consent. Now bondholders have sued, alleging it hid about $38B of debt. Oracle disputes that.
The AI building spree is costing people. DCD reported about 21,000 fewer staff in FY2026. We'd call it a strong business with a patchy record, so a 4.
