Do we like Oporto?
Portuguese-style flame-grilled chicken fast-food chain, founded in Sydney in 1986; franchised across Australia.
Our score: 5 out of 10. A well-known, long-running chain, but we found no evidence of notable good or bad conduct. It's private-equity owned, so we sit in the middle.
Oporto began in 1986 in North Bondi, Sydney. Founder António Cerqueira, an Australian of Portuguese descent, opened it as a charcoal chicken shop. It has since grown into a national chain with about 200 restaurants.
We went looking for labour or legal trouble, since franchise chains often have underpayment cases. Our search found cases against other brands, such as 85 Degrees, but nothing naming Oporto. That's absence of evidence, not a clean bill of health.
So it's a middle score. It's a familiar fast-food brand with no known scandal in what we found, but also nothing that makes us want to back it with our money.
