Do we like NRMA?
Member-owned motoring and travel group in NSW/ACT: roadside help, travel, parks, EV charging (Chargefox) and advocacy.
Our score: 6 out of 10. Probably, with caveats. It's a member-owned mutual that lobbies for drivers and has invested in EV charging. The big fines hit NRMA Insurance, which IAG owns.
The NRMA is a roughly century-old NSW motoring club. It describes itself as Australia's largest and longest-serving mutual, with more than 2.7 million members. It started out pushing for better roads and has since grown into travel, rentals and EV charging.
In 2022 the NRMA, leading a group of motoring clubs, bought Chargefox, Australia's biggest EV charging network, at a reported $56m valuation. Its CEO then, Rohan Lund, said member access would stay free or cheap. The clubs are also building fast chargers along national highways.
The drama is on the insurance side. In October 2026 the NSW regulator SIRA fined NRMA Insurance nearly $500k over CTP pricing errors that overcharged about 41,500 policies by an estimated $12m. In 2023 the Federal Court ordered a $40m penalty over a discount algorithm. That brand is owned by IAG, though, not the club.
We'd give it a middling-to-good score. A member-owned body with useful services deserves some credit, but many people mix up the club and the insurer, and it's worth knowing which one you're dealing with.
