Do we like MSI?
Makes gaming laptops, motherboards, graphics cards and PC parts. Based in Zhonghe, New Taipei, Taiwan.
Our score: 5 out of 10. A big, ordinary hardware maker. The search results show a few old consumer and efficiency problems and no big recent scandal, but we found little on good deeds. Middling.
MSI is Micro-Star International, founded in 1986 by five founders, including Joseph Hsu. It's based in Zhonghe, New Taipei, and listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange. Hsu is chairman, and a Digitimes item has him speaking at the June 2025 shareholders' meeting.
In 2022 MSI settled with the California Energy Commission. The investigation found its desktop computers didn't meet the efficiency standard and weren't certified. MSI agreed to pay $275,376 and to stop selling those models in California.
A 2017 US class action, Thornton v. Micro-Star International, accused MSI of marketing GT72 and GT80 gaming laptops as upgradeable to later NVIDIA GPU generations that they couldn't support. The sources we found don't say how it ended.
We found no recent big scandal, but also little to praise. That leaves a middling score: we wouldn't avoid them, but nothing here makes us keen to back them.
