Do we like Moose Toys?
Toy maker behind Shopkins, Mighty Beanz and Little Live Pets, based in Cheltenham, Melbourne, Australia.
Our score: 5 out of 10. A successful private toy maker with a few product-safety recalls, and little in the results on its labour, tax or environmental record. We'd call it mixed and would want more checking before we backed it.
Moose Toys is a private toy company in Cheltenham, Melbourne. One source says Manny Stul, Jacqui Tobias and Paul Solomon acquired it in 2001. Another source gives a different founding story, so the early history is unclear. Solomon is listed as CEO and co-owner.
Its hits include Shopkins and Mighty Beanz, and it bought UK firm Worlds Apart in 2018. It is still private, so there is little public detail on its finances or how it treats workers.
The big drama was the 2007 Bindeez recall. Solomon blamed a Chinese manufacturer for swapping an ingredient without warning, and the company ran a voluntary recall across Australia.
In 2017 the US Consumer Product Safety Commission listed a recall of about 427,000 Little Live Pets Lil Frog toys. A 2022 California Prop 65 notice also named Moose Toys LLC and related entities as alleged violators. We found no outcome for it.
We score it 5. The recalls are real but they were handled, and our searches turned up no big fines or scandals. We also found little on its ethics, so we can't say it's clearly good.
