Do we like Moccona?
Instant coffee brand, 'heritage' sold in Australia and Asia; owned by Amsterdam-based JDE Peet's, now part of Keurig Dr Pepper.
Our score: 5 out of 10. Mixed. It's a decent mainstream coffee brand, but its parent stayed in Russia and has faced deforestation questions. We'd hold off on backing it.
Moccona is an instant coffee brand that says its heritage goes back to 1753. It's now sold mostly in Australia, Malaysia and Singapore. Its owner is JDE Peet's, the Amsterdam coffee giant behind Jacobs, L'OR, Douwe Egberts and Peet's.
Ownership has just changed. Keurig Dr Pepper closed its roughly $18bn takeover of JDE Peet's on 1 April 2026. It plans to split into a drinks company and a global coffee company, led on the coffee side by Rafael Oliveira.
The big controversy is Russia. When many Western firms left after the invasion of Ukraine, JDE Peet's stayed. Its CEO said coffee is essential and that it complied with sanctions. It later said it would sell only local brands there, and Moccona was among the brands dropped.
On supply chains, the group says it funds farm-level audits and a child-labour project in Honduras. In 2025, Coffee Watch and AidEnvironment said JDE Peet's appeared to source from Brazilian farms linked to forest clearing. The company said those cases couldn't be linked to its operations.
So it's a mixed bag. The coffee is ordinary and the sustainability work is real but mostly self-reported. The Russia decision weighs heavily, and the new ownership is still settling in. That puts us at a middle score.
