Do we like Mistral AI?
Builds open-weight and commercial AI language models and the Le Chat assistant; based in Paris, France.
Our score: 6 out of 10. A promising European AI firm that shares open models and has a good record so far. We'd back it with some caution, since there are lobbying and training-data questions and little track record.
Mistral is a Paris AI lab with Arthur Mensch as CEO. It makes open-weight and proprietary language models. Reports say revenue has tripled since early 2025, and it has signed partnerships such as the one with Accenture on sovereign AI.
In September 2025 chip-equipment giant ASML put in €1.3bn, taking about 11% and a seat on Mistral's strategic committee. The round valued the company at about €11.7bn. Bpifrance and DST Global also took part.
The drama: in 2023 Mistral was reported to be leading lobbying to soften the EU's AI Act rules on foundation models. The company denies trying to block regulation. In 2024 its Microsoft partnership drew scrutiny from MEPs and the European Commission.
Critics have also said its open models lack safety controls. Mediapart, as relayed by a French outlet, raised the claim that it ignored training-data opt-outs. We found no court case or fine, so we land at a cautious, middling-good score.
