Do we like MG Motor?
Car brand (petrol, hybrid and electric) owned by China's SAIC Motor. Sold worldwide, with roots in the UK.
Our score: 5 out of 10. Cheap, popular cars and a big European presence. Our searches found little on how it treats workers, the environment or tax, so we can only call it mixed.
MG is a historic British badge, but today it's owned by China's SAIC Motor. That makes it a Chinese-owned brand selling cars around the world, including in Europe, India and Australia and New Zealand.
It's selling plenty. Just-auto reported MG delivered its one millionth customer car in Europe. Another report says it has been the best-selling Chinese car brand in Europe for 11 years running.
The EU put extra tariffs on Chinese-made electric cars. SAIC said it would take the EU to court, calling the investigation flawed, according to Spanish and French motoring outlets. It's a trade fight rather than a misdeed, so it doesn't move our score.
In India, MG runs as a joint venture with JSW. Autocar India reported that SAIC planned to cut its stake and pause new investment amid policy hurdles. That's a business reshuffle, not a scandal.
Our searches showed little on how MG treats workers, the environment or tax, so we land in the middle at 5. We'd want more evidence before backing it with our money.
