Do we like McKinsey & Company?

Global management consulting firm advising companies and governments; headquartered in New York, US.

Our score: 3 out of 10. We wouldn't back them. The $650m opioid settlement and the obstruction case are serious, and the compliance fixes are still on probation.

McKinsey is the best-known consulting firm in the world. It is a private partnership run by its senior partners, and Bob Sternfels is the global managing partner. It advises big companies and governments.

The big stain is opioids. In December 2024 it agreed to pay $650m to resolve a US Justice Department probe into its work for Purdue Pharma on OxyContin sales. The deal is a five-year deferred prosecution agreement, covering charges of conspiring to misbrand a drug and obstruction.

Former senior partner Martin Elling agreed to plead guilty to obstruction for destroying records tied to the Purdue work. Critics noted that no other executives faced charges. Total opioid-related payments now exceed $1.5bn.

It has also been cutting jobs. Reports describe about 200 tech roles cut in late 2025 and plans for roughly 10% workforce cuts. The Financial Times, via City A.M., said Sternfels faced opposition to his re-election over the layoffs and slower growth.
