Do we like Mazda?
Japanese carmaker (Mazda Motor Corporation) making cars and SUVs, based in Hiroshima, Japan.
Our score: 6 out of 10. A decent mid-sized carmaker with only a mild past scandal in our searches, but we found too little recent evidence to call it a standout.
Mazda is a Hiroshima-based carmaker. In March 2023 it named Masahiro Moro, a 40-year Mazda veteran who used to run its North American business, as president and CEO.
Toyota is a minority shareholder. CNBC and Reuters-based reports put its stake at about 5.1% in 2023. We couldn't find current figures.
The big black mark is from 2018. Japan's transport ministry said Mazda, Suzuki and Yamaha had tested vehicles improperly for fuel economy and emissions. Mazda later said it found errors but no falsification of the data it gave the ministry.
Older run-ins with the US EPA include a Clean Air Act settlement and a Miata emissions recall. Those are old, and we found little recent news, so we've scored it middling: not one to avoid, but not one we'd rave about.
