Do we like Maruti Suzuki?
India's largest carmaker, making small and mid-size passenger cars; based in New Delhi, majority-owned by Japan's Suzuki.
Our score: 5 out of 10. Mixed. It's a huge, dominant carmaker with a fined pricing policy and a bitter, unresolved labour history. We found little on its environmental record, so we'd hold back.
Maruti Suzuki is India's biggest carmaker. It's a listed company, and Japan's Suzuki Motor Corporation holds the majority stake. Figures vary by source, with reports putting it around 58%. Hisashi Takeuchi has been MD and CEO since April 2022, and R.C. Bhargava is listed as chairman.
In August 2021 the Competition Commission of India fined it Rs 200 crore. The CCI said its discount control policy stopped dealers from giving extra discounts, and it ordered the firm to stop. Maruti said it never imposed such a policy and would look at the order.
Then there's Manesar. A 2012 riot at the plant led to a death. In 2017 a court convicted 31 workers and acquitted 117, and 13 got life sentences. Workers' groups said the verdicts were unfair. That's a long shadow over how the firm handles labour.
We'd rate it a middle-of-the-road 5. It's a big and useful business, but the fine and the labour story weigh on it. We also couldn't find solid reporting on its environmental or tax record, so we can't give it more credit.
