Do we like Marriott?
Global hotel company with 30+ brands, mostly franchised and managed hotels; based in Bethesda, Maryland, US
Our score: 4 out of 10. A huge, competent hotel group, but its record on data security and fees is poor. We'd hold off, and we wouldn't be eager to back it.
Marriott is one of the world's biggest hotel groups. Anthony Capuano has been CEO since February 2021. He took over after Arne Sorenson died unexpectedly, and he joined the company back in 1995.
The big black mark is data security. In October 2024 Marriott agreed to pay $52 million to 49 states and DC, and the FTC ordered a 20-year security program. The FTC described three breaches between 2014 and 2020, including one it inherited from Starwood. Marriott admitted no liability.
Then there are the fees. Pennsylvania's attorney general fined Marriott $225,000 in 2023 for not complying with an earlier settlement on disclosing resort fees. DC's attorney general sued over resort fees in 2019. Guests also sued in 2023 over a worker-protection surcharge in LA.
Overall it's a mixed bag. It's a well-run giant, but the security failures and the fee fights keep it from being a company we'd happily put money behind.
