Do we like Mailchimp?

Email marketing and small-business marketing platform, based in Atlanta, US; part of Intuit.

Our score: 5 out of 10. Useful small-business tool, but it had repeated staff-targeted breaches and now sits inside Intuit. We'd hold off rather than back it with our money.

Mailchimp grew into one of the best-known email marketing tools for small businesses. Ben Chestnut was its co-founder and CEO when Intuit agreed to buy it in September 2021 for about $12 billion in cash and stock. That was Intuit's biggest deal ever.

Intuit's CEO Sasan Goodarzi said Intuit co-founder Scott Cook's close relationship with the Mailchimp founders helped Intuit win the competitive process.

Security is the big blot. In April 2022 attackers tricked staff into handing over credentials, and they reached 319 accounts, mostly crypto and finance firms. In January 2023 it happened again, with social engineering against staff and contractors. Mailchimp said data for 133 customers was reached.

A customer sued Intuit and Mailchimp's operating subsidiary over crypto thefts linked to the 2022 intrusion. The suit alleges poor security. It's an allegation, and our search didn't show how the case ended. We found no regulator fine, so we land in the middle.
