Do we like Maersk?
Global container shipping and logistics group, based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Our score: 6 out of 10. Mixed. A huge, foundation-controlled shipper with only small fines in what we found. Its climate and trading record needs more checking, so we'd back it with some caution.
Maersk is one of the world's biggest container shipping and logistics firms, run from Copenhagen. Vincent Clerc has been CEO since 1 January 2023, and Robert Maersk Uggla is chairman.
It's not run by a typical shareholder crowd. The A.P. Møller Foundation, through A.P. Møller Holding, controls about 51.7% of the voting shares. That's steady, long-term ownership, though the sources give slightly different percentages.
On the bad side, California's air regulator (CARB) has repeatedly settled with Maersk entities over ships not using compliant fuel in state waters. One 2025 case was $22,500 over the Grete Maersk. These are small sums for a company this size, but they keep recurring.
The US Federal Maritime Commission fined Maersk $1.9 million over detention billing. That means charging fees to parties who hadn't agreed to its terms. It's a customer-treatment issue, not just a ship-emissions one.
Our score is a cautious 6. The ownership is stable and the fines we found were modest. But we found no strong evidence of good deeds in these searches, and we haven't checked its climate record.
