Do we like Macpac?
Outdoor clothing and camping gear brand and retailer, founded in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1973.
Our score: 6 out of 10. A decent, durable-gear brand with sensible environmental policies. The living-wage gap in its supply chain holds it back, and our searches found little on scandals.
Macpac started in Christchurch in 1973, founded by Bruce McIntyre. It later passed through a few owners, including Mouton Noir and Kathmandu founder Jan Cameron, who bought in around 2011.
In 2015, Australian private equity firm CHAMP bought a majority stake. In 2018, ASX-listed Super Retail Group, which also owns Supercheap Auto, BCF and Rebel, bought the lot for NZ$144 million. It planned to fold its Rays stores into the Macpac brand.
On ethics, Good On You rates Macpac 'Good' overall. It gives it 3 out of 5 for people, saying it has strong policies on hazardous chemicals but isn't doing enough to make sure workers get a living wage.
Macpac's own site says it is Toitū carbonreduce certified. We found no regulator fines or big scandals. We put it a bit above the middle, because the wage gap in its supply chain remains.
