Do we like Lorna Jane?

Women's activewear brand with stores in Australia and abroad, based in Brisbane, Australia.

Our score: 4 out of 10. Mixed, leaning no. The $5m fine for false 'antivirus' claims and the bullying and PR rows count against it, and we found little good to set against them.

Lorna Jane Clarkson started the brand around 1989, and it grew into a big Australian women's activewear label. Forbes Australia says it now has well over 100 stores. Sources differ on the founding year and the store count.

The company has been on the market before. Ragtrader and Inside Retail reported a sale attempt at about $500 million after a listing was dropped. The brand is still private.

The big drama came in the pandemic. Reports say the Federal Court fined the company $5 million over claims that its LJ Shield clothing was 'antivirus' and could protect against coronavirus.

There have been people dramas too. A former store manager, Amy Robinson, took legal action in Brisbane alleging weight-related bullying, and the company's #TellTheTruth post drew criticism. A 'receptionist/fit model' job ad also caused a backlash. We didn't find how the Robinson case ended.
