Do we like Lipton?
Global tea brand (Lipton Teas and Infusions, formerly ekaterra, ex-Unilever), owned by private equity firm CVC.
Our score: 4 out of 10. Famous brand with a murky record. Abuse allegations at its Kenyan estates and a disputed estate sale mean we'd hold off backing them for now.
Lipton is one of the world's best-known tea brands. It used to belong to Unilever. In 2022 Unilever sold its tea arm to private equity firm CVC for about €4.5 billion. It was called ekaterra at first, then renamed Lipton Teas and Infusions.
In 2023 a BBC Africa Eye and Panorama investigation reported widespread sexual exploitation on Kenyan tea estates owned by Unilever and James Finlay. The estates supply brands including Lipton. Lipton's owner said it suspended two managers and ordered a full independent investigation.
Rainforest Alliance then suspended certification at an ekaterra-run Kenyan estate and a James Finlay one. Kenyan prosecutors also said they would investigate. We couldn't see from these results how either ended.
In 2024 Lipton said it would sell its Kenyan estates to Browns Investments, linked to Sri Lanka's LOLC. The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre reported critics saying the land was seized from local clans and that a local cooperative's matching bid was ignored. Lipton said the sale doesn't change community rights.
